Cuomo bats leadership ball back to legislators

Posted By on Mon, Apr 8, 2013 at 12:10 PM

The New York Post published an article this morning speculating that Governor Andrew Cuomo and his staff want to push Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver out of his leadership post. It also says that Assembly Majority Leader Joe Morelle could be installed in Silver's place.

According to the Post, Cuomo planned to use last week's arrests of legislators and political leaders to push the leadership change. In one case, an Assembly member is accused of accepting a bribe to introduce legislation. The other case revolves around allegations that State Senator Malcolm Smith paid off several New York City Republican leaders to get their support for a mayoral run.

Cuomo addressed the Post report on this morning's Capitol Pressroom, a daily public radio program focusing on state government and politics. He pointed out that neither of the cases from last week involved the speaker.

"It's wholly up to the legislative bodies to select a leader," Cuomo said on the program. And he said he wouldn't interfere with that process.
