ROCK: David Bromberg and the Angel Band (12/7)

Published by Frank De Blase on Dec 06, 2006
David Bromberg is an American music constant. The man mish-mashes every acoustically rooted classic style together into a brilliant convergence. He'll tweak the blues with folk, he'll goose bluegrass with jazz. He'll rock your world. You've heard Bromberg everywhere as a sideman on platters by artists like Bob Dylan and Jerry Jeff Walker, Ringo Starr, and the Reverend Gary Davis to name a few.

Bromberg lackadaisically shifts from Bob Wills' western swing to Cajun fiddle tunes to blues from the Delta and Chicago. He manages to introduce elements at odd times that might not occur to other Americana cats. Just check out how keen the swingin' sax sounds soloing through the bluegrass on "Lonesome Dave's Lovesick Blues" on his 1972 album Demon In Disguise. Or better yet, you could check out The David Bromberg and the Angel Band when it plays Thursday, December 7, at The German House Theatre, 315 Gregory Street, 232-1900, at 8 p.m. $35-$40.
