BLUES: Boxcar Satan (10/9)

Published by Frank De Blase on Oct 03, 2007

San Antonio's Boxcar Satan would've been perfect for HBO's late, lamented "Carnivale," what with all the Depression-era desperation, damnation, salvation, and no access to penicillin. I know bands that embrace the dark - especially through the blues - often do it as a pastiche or lampoon, because there is no heaven or hell. There's good and there's evil and of course there's the blues to help you decide which team you play for. Frankly, I'm rootin' for the evil, especially if it sounds like Boxcar Satan with all its raunchy and exotic field holler, lo-fi ramshackle wail. If you like to get down to Captain Beefheart, you're really gonna dig this Texas Trio, boy.
