This week's calls to action include the following events and activities. (All are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted.)

Akeel Bilgrami lecture

The Center for Philosophic Exchange will hold a lecture with Akeel Bilgrami on "Gandhi, Newton and the Enlightenment," at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, October 11. Bilgrami, a professor at Columbia University, will speak at SUNY Brockport, 220-221 Seymour Union.

Looking for new recruits

Volunteers in Living Color will hold a recruitment fair from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, October 13. The purpose of the fair is to put people of color in touch with agencies looking for volunteers. It will be held at the MCC Damon City Campus (the Sibley building).

Hudson corridor meeting

The Hudson Business Association will hold a meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, October 15, at 1370 Hudson Avenue, to discuss the Hudson Avenue corridor study.

Fight the power

Aimee Allison and David Solnit, co-authors of "Army of None," will discuss combating militarism in our culture at 7 p.m. Tuesday, October 16, at the School Without Walls, 480 Broadway.

Recycle your tech stuff

Brighton and Maven Technologies will hold a computer and recycling drop off on Saturday, October 13 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Bring all electronic devices, except household appliances, to 1941 Elmwood Avenue.

Plan Thurston Road's future

The Sector 4 Community Development Corp. and the city's economic development department will hold the second Thurston Road Visioning Workshop at 6 p.m. Monday, October 15 at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 174 Thurston Road. Registration: 328-5750.

FAIR hearing

There will be a public hearing on County Executive Maggie Brooks' FAIR Plan at 6 p.m. Thursday, October 11. The hearing is at the County Office Building, Legislative Chambers, room 406, 39 West Main Street. Registration to speak: 753-1940.

Antiwar action

Antiwar vigils will be held on Wednesday, October 17 at three locations: First Unitarian Church, 220 South Winton Road at 7:30 a.m.; the corners of Park Avenue and Culver Road at 7:30 a.m.; and Irondequoit United Church of Christ, 644 Titus Avenue, at 7:30 a.m.

Two Loach films at Dryden

The Labor Film Series will show the new Ken Loach film, "It's a Free World," at 8 p.m. Wednesday, October 10 at the Dryden Theater, George Eastman House. His film on homelessness, "Cathy Come Home," will be shown on Thursday, October 11 at the same time and location. Admission info: 271-4090.
