Detainee rights

Human rights attorney and UR alumna Barbara Olshansky will speak about the rights of Guantanamo Bay detainees on Friday, October 19, at the UR River Campus, Rush Rhees Library, at 3 p.m.

Middle East talk

Peace, Action and Education and Rochester Against War will present a talk by journalist Dahr Jamail on the Middle East and his book "Beyond the Green Zone" on Friday, October 19, at School Without Walls, 480 Broadway, at 7 p.m.

Don't cuddle the coyote

The state Department of Environmental Conservation will host a public meeting with biologist Scott Smith on encountering eastern coyotes in our communities on Tuesday, October 23, at Finger Lakes Community College, at 6:30 p.m.

Gumbleton lecture

Nazareth College will host a lecture by activist and retired Catholic bishop Thomas Gumbleton, who will speak on justice and peace at 7 p.m.  Thursday, October 18, at the Shults Center. He will speak again on Friday, October 19 at 1:30 p.m, about Iraq and the US responsibility to create stability and peace.

God, to the extreme

Nazareth College's Center for Interfaith Studies presents a panel discussion on Religion and Religious Extremism on Wednesday, October 24, at 7 p.m. in the Shults Center.

Brighton forum

Supervisor Sandra Frankel and members of the Town Board will meet with Brighton residents at an open-topic forum at 7 p.m. Wednesday, October 17, at Temple Sinai, 363 Penfield Road.

Pocket of Middle East peace

Ahmad Hijazi, a Palestinian Muslim, will talk about the Oasis of Peace, a village between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem where Jews and Arabs teach peace, respect and equality. Hijazi will speak on Wednesday, October 24 at Downtown United Presbyterian Church, 121 Fitzhugh Street, at 7 pm.
