DEVELOPMENT: Canalside housing under review

The Brighton Town Board may review recommendations from the town's Planning Board this month on a proposal for a major housing development along the Erie Canal. | Anthony Costello & Son Development plans a $150 million, 336-unit project: the biggest addition to Brighton's housing stock in more than 10 years. Called The Reserve at Brighton, it would be located on 68 acres on the north side of the canal at South Clinton Avenue and I-590. The project would include town homes, lofts, condos, and single-family homes. | Environmentalists have been worried about the impact on grassland, wetlands, and birds. | During a Costello presentation last week, some Planning Board members expressed concern about the height of some of the buildings. At 75 feet, they would exceed the maximum height limit by more than 45 feet.

The Costello firm also owns nearby canal-side land, which it plans to develop for housing, retail, and commercial space.

The Town Board is meeting on October 10, but as of early this week the Reserve project wasn't on the agenda. If it's not taken up at that meeting, says Public Works Commissioner Tom Low, the public can speak about it in the open forum. And the Town Board could take it up at its October 24 meeting.
