EDUCATION: Picking Rochester's new superintendent

Published on Oct 16, 2007
The search process for the city schools superintendent has evolved in some strange and contradictory ways.

Somehow, a process cloaked in secrecy actually produced one of this community's most open, candid, intelligent, and straightforward public servants - Tim Mains.

Somehow, despite Mains' tailor-made resume, the board decided to cast its net again (apparently because teachers union president Adam Urbanski complained that Mains had never been a superintendent).

Somehow, Mains excelled as a principal without ever having been a principal, and he became a nearly instant success on City Council (though he had never been a councilman before, either).

Somehow, Tim Mains is willing to tackle this job, and we think Rochester would be lucky to have him. He has the experience, energy, and tenacity to tackle the challenges.

If only, somehow, the School Board could muster the courage to hire him and make the commitment to work with him to turn things around.
