A Dropkick Murphys show is like a big brawl where everyone's on the same side, and nobody really gets hurt. The Boston band's music is brash and is steeped in blue collar Irish pride. Like Celtic punk cousins Flogging Molly, The Murphys tweak punk and soul with traditional instruments and song quotes. The trademark bagpipe intro gets me fired up every time. The new "The Meanest Of Times" keeps up the pogo and street anthem thrash. "I'm Shipping Up To Boston," a killer cut off the band's previous release "The Warrior Code," was featured in the film "The Departed." But mainstream flirtations like this don't threaten this band's integrity at all. Erin go nuts.
Dropkick Murphys play with The Briggs Thursday, November 15, at Water Street Music Hall, 204 N Water St, 8 p.m., $22-$25, 325-5600, waterstreetmusic.com.
