This week's calls to action include the following events and activities. (All are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted.)

Anti-violence forum

MCC students will host a two-hour anti-violence forum, "Commitment to Community: Creating a Legacy of Change," at 5 p.m. on Thursday, November 8, at the Sibley Building, 228 East Main Street.

Edison to discuss environmental concerns

Edison Educational Campus will hold two meetings on results of the school's environmental investigations on Thursday, November 8, at 655 Colfax Street. The meetings are at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Dickman film at UR

Filmmaker and activist Theresa Dickman will show her film "Whose Children are These?" about three Muslim teens dealing with US immigration policies on Thursday, November 8, at the UR's Rush Rhees Library, at 5 p.m.

Liberty lecture

SUNY Brockport will host "Why Care about Liberty," a lecture by Jan Narveson, professor of philosophy at the University of Waterloo, on Thursday, November 8, 220-221 Seymour Union at 4:30 p.m.

‘Lost Boy' in Pittsford

The Women's Club of Pittsford will host Salva Dut, one of the "Lost Boys of the Sudan, to speak at Pittsford-Mendon High School, 472 Mendon Road, at 7 p.m.

Veterans against the war

Veterans will honor veterans with a call for an end to the Iraq War at a 3 p.m. ceremony on Sunday, November 11, Washington Square Park. A discussion with vets will follow at First Universalist Church, 150 Clinton Avenue, at 4:30 p.m.

Peace vigils

Peace vigils will be at two locations on Tuesday, November 13. The First Unitarian Church vigil is at 220 South Winton Road at 4:30 p.m. Several churches will hold a vigil at Fitzhugh Street and Broad Street at 4:30 p.m.

Race in the age of fear

Downtown United Presbyterian Church will host a discussion with Bruce Jacobs, author of "Race Manners for the 21st Century: Navigating the Minefield Between Black and White Americans in the Age of Fear," at 7:30 p.m. Friday, November 9, at Downtown Presbyterian Church, 121 N. Fitzhugh Street. Admission: $12 in advance, $15 at the door, $5 students. Information: 325-7727.

Batiste on the war

Retired Maj. Gen. John Batiste will speak about the Iraq War at the Greece Baptist Church at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 14, at 1230 Long Pond Road.

Birth rights

The National Council of Jewish Women will present "Contraception: From Access to Advocacy," a discussion about access to birth-control education and prescriptions, on Wednesday, November 14, at the Jewish Community Center, 1200 Edgewood Avenue, at 7:30 p.m.

Alien invaders topic of Brighton talk

The Genesee Valley Audubon Society will present "Garden Villains: 12 alien plants invading Monroe County," a discussion with Christine Sevilla, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 14, at Brighton Town Hall, 2300 Elmwood Avenue.
