Violinist William Preucil has generated an unusual amount controversy during his tenure with the Cleveland Orchestra. Few can agree on whether he's been a positive force or power-monger within "America's most refined orchestra." But everyone agrees Preucil plays a mean fiddle. He'll demonstrate when he arrives to play Bartok's First Violin Concerto with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.
In addition to the Bartok, Christopher Seaman will conduct two pieces tied to specific landscapes. Everyone loves Smetana's "The Moldau," which traces the path of a river through the towns and countryside of Czechoslovakia. Audiences will also hear Beethoven's love letter to the Vienna woods, Symphony No. 6, the "Pastoral." City readers of a certain age may associate Beethoven's masterpiece with baby unicorns.
The RPO performs Thursday, November 15, and Saturday, November 17, at the Eastman Theatre, 60 Gibbs St, at 8 p.m., $20-$55, 454-2100, rpo.org.
