CLASSICAL: RPO Silent Movies (11/9-10)

Published by Brenda Tremblay on Nov 07, 2007

The things we do for love! In the silent film "Safety Last!," comedian Harold Lloyd plays a country boy who moves to the big city and, through letters, misleads his hometown sweetheart. She shows up. Comedy ensues. "Safety Last!" tickled Rochester audiences when it was first shown in Eastman Theatre in 1923. Now Jeff Tyzik is bringing it back.

Tyzik, the RPO pops conductor, is Mr. Versatility, and he'll prove it again this week when he conducts - for the first time in his career - live music during a silent film. If you go, you'll also hear other light-hearted works from the original 1923 program, including Franz Von Suppé's "Overture to Poet and Peasant," Pietro Mascagni's aria "Voi lo sapete" from "Cavalleria Rusticana" with mezzo-soprano Korin Kormick, and Frederic Chopin's "Suite from Les Sylphides."

The RPO performs Friday and Saturday, November 9-10, at the Eastman Theatre, 60 Gibbs St, 8 p.m., $20-$57, 454-2100, rpo.org.
