It is no coincidence that John Coltrane was listening to Indian music during his most experimental period. Carnatic music, the melody-based, Southern Indian traditional style, has a great deal in common with the free-form improvisation Coltrane was exploring. Saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa (last heard here with pianist Vijay Iyer) merges Carnatic music with jazz in his Dakshina Ensemble, featuring saxophone master, Kadri Gopalnath. Violin, sitar-guitar, mridangam (barrel drum), bass and drums are employed by the seven-member group on tour performing Mahanthappa's new work, "Kinsmen/Svajanam." As Mahanthappa says, "It's going to be a wild ride."
The Dakshina Ensemble performs Saturday, November 17, at the India Community Center, 2171 Monroe-Wayne County Line Rd, Macedon, 8 p.m., $7-$15, 425-3891.
