THEATER: "Steel Pier" (11/10-11 & 11/16-17)

Published by Dale Evans on Nov 07, 2007

Think "They Shoot Horses Don't They" meets "Carousel." At least that's what it seems from the synopsis. Having had only a two-month run on Broadway, Pittsford Musicals bravely brings "Steel Pier" to the stage.

Good Girl marathon dancer is married to Bad Man platter spinner, but no longer wants to run scams with him. She falls in love with Nice Man, who, of course, dies. (I've always been confused by these Good Girls who marry Bad Men, but somehow remain Good Girls, eliciting our sympathy. It must be a Depression Era thing.)

Although the show features a flawed script, songwriting icons John Kander and Fred Ebb ("Cabaret," "Chicago") supply the music. Known for their razzle-dazzle numbers, here's a chance to broaden your knowledge-base of their careers.

"Steel Pier" dances onto the stage at Pittsford Sutherland High School, 55 Sutherland Street, on Saturdays, November 10 & 17, at 8 p.m., and Sundays, November 11 & 18, at 2 p.m., and Friday, November 16, at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $15-$20. Call 586-1500 for more information.
