WORLD BEAT: Hugh Masekela (11/12)

Published by Saby Reyes-Kulkarni on Nov 07, 2007

Nazareth College's "Songs of the Spirit" presents an interfaith program where sacred and popular music intersects. South African trumpet luminary Hugh Masekela headlines the eclectic bill. Now approaching 70 years of age, Masekela's history and pedigree go on and on, and his impact in the realms of jazz, fusion, and world beat cannot be overstated. Masekela's anti-apartheid stance and mid-career shift toward exploring his indigenous musical roots no doubt account for his inclusion here. It will be interesting to see what sides of his creativity Masekela chooses to show in this context, and fans should bear in mind that he shares the stage with a slew of other acts, with a series of readings interspersed throughout the evening.
