COUNTY: Public defender search criticized

Published by Jeremy Moule on Dec 12, 2007

The process to find a replacement for Public Defender Ed Nowak, who retires this year, is under fire.

Wayne Zyra, president of the Monroe County Legislature, set up a committee to review job candidates. The committee will include political appointees, judges, and representatives from the Monroe County Bar Association. But some heavyweight critics - among them Nazareth College President Daan Braveman, Bishop Matthew Clark, and the Monroe County Bar Association - say the committee lacks minority voices and appears partisan.

Speaking before the County Legislature on Tuesday, December 11, the Rev. Franklin Florence, president of the Faith Community Alliance and pastor of Central Church of Christ, said the Legislature should not allow partisan politics to "cause division to erupt again in this community."
