This NYC four-piece, led by Rochester native Steve Schiltz, didn't drop off the face of the earth after its quick and unexpected entry into the public eye in 2003. With a major-label debut produced by Dave Fridmann (the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev), the hearty endorsement of the then-invincible Strokes, and an appearance in Rolling Stone, it seemed as if Longwave's star was on the rise when the band's lineup began to unravel and its sophomore album failed to make an impact. Rest assured, though: Schiltz has been keeping busy and readying the band's return. Celebrated in these parts for his flashy guitar work in Dizzy Monk, Schiltz tends to play it straight as a leader, relying on jangly melodies and texture, but his songwriting remains ripe with underlying surprises.
