Rochester Mayor Robert Duffy is asking City Council for approximately $1.6 million to continue funding the Zero Tolerance police initiative. This is on top of the $2.5 million Council approved for the program last month. The $2.5 million was supposed to fund the program through at least the end of the year.
"We're burning through money," Councilmember Adam McFadden said. "They didn't think we'd run through that money to the end of January. This is looking more like Christmas bonuses to cops than making the streets safer."
Pouring money into police overtime instead of attacking the origins of crime is "criminal at this point to me," McFadden said. "We can't spend our way out of this problem and they're attempting to do that."
In his request to City Council, Duffy says he will likely ask for even more money in March 2008.
Council should vote on Duffy's latest request at its December 18 meeting.
