POLITICS: The parties created the fair-campaign review

Published on Dec 18, 2007
As chair of the first Fair Campaign Practices Committee during the final 14 years of its existence, I am grateful to Michael Nolan for his laudatory comments as to how the committee functioned (The Mail, October 31).

One clarification: the committee was not, as he stated, the creation of my law firm (Harris Beach) or any other law firm. To their everlasting credit, the two political parties created it.

The Democrats and the Republicans asked five organizations for assistance in ruling on complaints of unfairness during political campaigns: the Monroe County Bar Association, the League of Women Voters, the Chamber of Commerce, the Advertising Council, and the Council of Churches. Each appointed a member of the committee, which then functioned effectively for 17 years until the Republicans pulled out.
