ROOTS ROCK: Commander Cody (12/8)

Published by Ryan Whirty on Dec 05, 2007
How many rock ‘n' rollers can say they have a MFA in sculpture and painting from one of the best universities in the country? At least one can. George Frayne, a.k.a. Commander Cody, earned that piece of paper from the University of Michigan in 1968. That might explain why the guy's as well known for his paintings as his music. Both his art and his music, by the way, are a little kooky, each rooted in the hippie culture of the late 1960's. Cody has been playing his brand of boogie-woogie, R&B, blues, and rock ‘n' roll for four decades, and he's been painting for even longer.
