SINGER/SONGWRITER: Loudon Wainwright III (12/6)

Published by Ryan Whirty on Dec 05, 2007

My introduction to Loudon Wainwright III came from Johnny Cash's cover of "The Man Who Couldn't Cry" on Cash's first American Recordings album. The song is soaked with quirk and dry humor, two traits that have been staples of Wainwright's music since he released his first album in 1970. Wainwright rapidly became more than just a singer/songwriter - he developed into a cult hero in the order of Tom Waits and the Roches. Wainwright uses his disarming and charming wit to make fans laugh and think at the same time. Opening the show will be Wainwright's daughter, Lucy Wainwright Roche.

Wainwright plays Thursday, December 6, at Water Street Music Hall, 204 N Water St, 8 p.m., $25-$27, 325-5600, waterstreetmusic.com.
