CLASSICAL: Kronos Quartet (2/7)

Published by Brenda Tremblay on Feb 06, 2007

You might have heard the Kronos Quartet playing African-inspired, pre-Baroque, minimalist, or post-rock grooves. Or the blues. Or straight-up classical. The legendary string group performs in an astonishing range of styles. Original in the most creative sense, Kronos includesDavid Harrington, John Sherba (violins), Hank Dutt (viola), and Eastman alum Jeffrey Zeigler(cello). The group has made 40 recordings, earned a Grammy award, and this week it'll play here.

The Kronos Quartet will perform eclectic works, from the music of minimalist master Steve Reich to songs by the Icelandic "post-rock" group Sigur Rós to arrangements of traditional tunes from the Middle East, Scandinavia, India, and Northern Canada. Each piece on the program was written or arranged specifically for the Kronos Quartet. Not to be missed. Wednesday, February 7, at the Eastman Theatre, 26 Gibbs Street, 274-1000, 8 p.m., $12-$25.
