JAZZ: Russell Malone (2/9-2/10)

Published by Ron Netsky on Feb 06, 2007

On his new album, Live At Jazz Standard, Volume I, guitarist extraordinaire Russell Malone provides a palpable sense of the excitement he brings to every performance. The album is full of great originals like "He Said What?" and "Flirt," which showcase the ability of his magic fingers to fly over the fret board with equal shares of precision and abandon. His performance on "Mean Streak" is so frantic it's a wonder he can keep his solos under control. And when he slows down for a ballad --- like Milt Jackson's wonderful "Heartstrings" --- his beautiful legato runs are imbued with a sad, bluesy tinge. When Malone takes the stage at the 37th Annual Penfield Jazz Fundraiser Concerts for two concerts this weekend he will be joined by a variety of student groups, the members of which will thrill to be working with a jazz master.

Russell Malone plays with various ensembles Friday and Saturday, February 9 and 10, at Penfield High School, 25 High School Drive, Penfield, 7:30 p.m., $6-$10. Tickets are available at the school's music office, The Bop Shop, Atlas Music, Music and Arts and the Penfield branch of Canandaigua National Bank.
