MUSEUMS: Visiting really old Rochester

Published by Susie Hume on Feb 13, 2007
One of the most popular exhibits at the Rochester Museum and Science Center is its "Expedition Earth," which lets visitors get a sense of what life was like in pre-historic Upstate New York. A life-size mastodon, virtual hikes through the glacial features of Mendon Ponds Park, a glacial ice cave: all of that has been drawing big crowds.

A new state grant will enable the museum to expand the exhibit, remodeling 6000 square feet of adjacent space. New features will include re-created habitats of local animals and what the museum calls an "earthquake platform," which will let visitors get a sense of what it feels like to be in an earthquake. The expected completion date for the "Expedition Earth" renovations is October 2007.

The grant will also help the museum expand its Rochester Business Hall of Fame, transforming the building's third floor into what RMSC is naming "Innovation Place." It'll be an interactive display showcasing Rochester's heritage of inventors and entrepreneurs.
