POLITICS: DiNapoli's the new comptroller

Published on Feb 07, 2007

The New York Times is reporting that the State Assembly, in a rebellion against Governor Eliot Spitzer, has chosen Assembly member Thomas DiNapoli as state comptroller. Assembly leaders had previously agreed to make their selection from nominees chosen by an independent panel. None of the panel's three nominees were Assembly members, however, infuriating the Assembly leadership. DiNapoli, who has represented Nassau County, resigned from his Assembly seat Wednesday afternoon. Several Assembly members --- including Rochester's Joseph Morelle --- had campaigned for the comptroller's job, but DiNapoli had been considered the favorite among the politicians.
