POLITICS: Giess and Stephenson will retire

Published on Feb 07, 2007
City Council's most senior members, Council President Lois Giess and northwest district Councilmember Bob Stevenson, have announced that they won't seek re-election this year.

Giess was appointed to fill the late Thomas Ryan's east district seat in 1986, when Ryan became mayor. She has been president since 1994 and has gained the reputation of being a quiet, firm, and talented political leader, guiding the sometimes fractious Council through the administration of former Mayor Bill Johnson and the first year of the Duffy administration.

Stevenson has served on Council since 1988 and has chaired the parks, public works, and environment committee since 1990.

Giess's retirement is certain to spur competition among several current Councilmembers for the presidency.
