Liz Berlin's voice gets a little steamrolled when she sings with Rusted Root. With all the jam band histrionics and noodling stripped away, a beautiful voice emerges. Hers is a voice comfortable in slower tempos and melodies that float to alto altitudes and beyond.
Berlin's AudioBioGraphical is earthy a la Rusted Root but exhibits just a smidge of veneer. It gets funky too, but there's still a narcotic reserve amidst the groove and production. Rusted Root fans will dig this. And those outside the circle are gonna, too.
Liz Berlin plays with Rusted Root Friday, February 9, at the Main Street Armory, 900 East Main Street, 232-3221, 8 p.m., $23.50.
