ROCK: Phonograph (2/16)

Published by Frank De Blase on Feb 13, 2007

Here's a perfect blend of tried 'n' true and ain't-never-tried-before. Phonograph is a rootsy, song-centric Brooklyn-based band infused with oddly beautiful and thankfully non-distracting psychedelia. It's as if the band showed up in the studio to record an album full of American grit and dust and the previous band left a MOOG behind. Take my word for it, this totally works. The band's focus and obvious willingness to fiddle is comfortably exciting, raggedly slick, and cool.

Phonograph plays with Ice Cream Social and Burning Daylight Friday, February 16, the Bug Jar, 219 Monroe Avenue, 454-2966, 7 p.m., $6-$8.
