SCHOOLS: Names surface for interim superintendent

Published by Tim Louis Macaluso on Feb 07, 2007
To run the district while Rochester looks for a new superintendent, the School Board is scrambling to find an interim superintendent. And about a dozen names, some very familiar to local educators, are getting initial consideration.

Among them are two retired area superintendents, Josephine Kehoe and William Cala.

Kehoe, a former East Irondequoit superintendent, took the helm of the Greece Central School District last year during months of turmoil, guiding that district through its search for a new superintendent.

Cala, former superintendent of the Fairport School District, has made a name for himself for two public stands. He made national headlines for insisting that parents have the right to withhold students' records from Army recruiters. And he has been a state leader in opposing rigid standardized tests.

Also on the list: Todd Eagle, who served as interim superintendent for the Hilton School District; Sam Walton, a former Rochester school district administrator who has been involved with St. John Fisher College's Education Leaders Program; and Dr. Walter Cooper, former member of the New York State Board of Regents. But Cooper does not have state certification to be a superintendent, which could pose a problem.
