SPORTS: Soap Box Derby (2/17)

Published on Feb 13, 2007

Rochester is the home of Eastman Kodak, the "Garbage Plate," and, a little known fact, the first indoor Soap Box Derby. On Saturday, February 17, Rochester will continue the tradition with an indoor Soap Box Derby held at the Main Street Armory. The event will feature kids from more than 10 different states and Canada competing in a number of categories. Kids who would like to race are welcome to bring their cars, and the event is open to spectators too. In addition, the Cub Scouts will hold their county-wide Pinewood Derby, featuring homemade miniature wooden racers. This marks the first time the kid-centric race events will be held in conjunction.

The Main Street Armory is located at 900 East Main Street. The Soap Box Derby takes place 8 a.m.-7 p.m. (prospective racers should arrive at 7 a.m.) The Pinewood Derby takes place noon-5 p.m. Admission is $2. For more information visit the website at www.rochestersoapboxderby.com.
