The Chocolate Bar: sweet new fondue bar in the East End

Published by Noelle d'Estries on Feb 13, 2007

Fondue machines are on display everywhere this time of year, with their bubbling pools of chocolate and cheese. I can never bring myself to buy one; they mock me with their impracticability. (Do people actually use these, or is this a ploy to add another box in the basement next to the dated exercise bike?) On Valentine's Day fondue is everywhere --- lovers dip strawberries in chocolate with lust dripping off their lips, while those who ran to Wegmans to get the pre-made versions sulk, exhausted and bitter over the holiday. But why settle? A new fondue bar has arrived, as The Chocolate Bar opens Friday, February 16, at SoHo East,

The old Martini Bar at SoHo East has been renovated into the new Chocolate Bar. It sits behind a glass partition to separate --- but not isolate --- it from the rest of the club. Jennifar Manetta, one of the vice-presidents of Ronnie Davis' nightlife empire on the corner of East and Lawrence, says the new venue will be open Thursday through Saturday nights, 8 p.m.-2 a.m. You'll find a new stage, hardwood floors, and local artwork inside along with tables set up for fondue. Mouthwatering chocolate and cheese will be served with fruit and bread. They do all the hard work, all you have to do is dip and savor.

The double-dipping motif continues on Fridays and Saturdays, as local acoustic artists will perform in pairs. For those of you are old enough to remember Rhythm, the "dueling musicians" vibe is closely modeled after that club.

The Chocolate Bar has a full bar with an even more expansive wine list than its predecessor. It will also be available for private parties prior to business hours. Reservations are recommended for tables; call 262-2030 to reserve yours.

Let's face it, Valentine's Day isn't for everyone, whether you're single or attached. For some of us, it brings back horrible memories of 6th grade and not receiving chocolate from your boyfriend of three days, whom you strategically started dating for the candy. (Damn you, Bobby Booyah, damn you!) And that's OK. The Chocolate Bar brings Rochester a little romance for every day of the year. Check it out starting this Friday at 8 p.m.
