"Treasure Island"; "Alexander Who's Not, Not, Not, Not, Not, Not Going to Move"

Published by Linda Kostin on Mar 21, 2007

Rochester Children's Theatre and TYKEs (Theatre Young Kids Enjoy) present musical productions faithfully adapted from two very different books.

Before Captain Jack Sparrow and Will Turner, the original pirates of the Caribbean mixed it up in Robert Louis Stevenson's classic Treasure Island. RCT's original Broadway-style production features a rousing score befitting the thrilling adventures of young Jim Hawkins. Fleeing England with a treasure map, Jim and his friends set sail for the Caribbean. The good news is there's a parrot onboard. The bad news is he belongs to Long John Silver, an infamous pirate who's also after the treasure. The opposing sides square off in spectacular battle scenes as they race to find the treasure. See the world premiere of RCT's Treasure Island: A New Musical at Nazareth College Arts Center on March 24, 25, and 31 at 2 p.m. and March 24 and 30 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $12. TYKEs' Alexander, Who's Not Not Not Not Not Not Going to Move takes a lighthearted look at coping with change. Adults have life experience and medication at their disposal when facing a major upheaval. Kids have to work through their anxiety one freak-out at a time. When the dust settles, Alexander learns that although his city, best friend, babysitter, and soccer team may change, he still has his family. And whenever you're surrounded by family, you're home. (Especially if you're too young to have in-laws.) Adapted by Judith Viorst, author of the popular Alexander series, the show is funny, heart-warming and energetic --- just like the book. See Alexander at the School of the Arts, 45 Prince Street, March 24 and 31 at 11 a.m. & 2 p.m., and March 25 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10. Visit www.tykestheatre.org or call 723-6080.
