If Leo Kottke had recorded only one album, 6- and 12-String Guitar, he would still have a spot reserved right beside John Fahey in the pantheon of astounding finger-picking guitarists. Kottke has recorded another 30 or so albums since that 1971 masterpiece, many of which also feature his deep, bluesy vocals. But, ultimately, it's his phenomenal dexterity and broad knowledge of American roots music that make him the musical treasure that his is. When Kottke really gets going and shifts into overdrive on an instrumental, his fingers start picking and sliding so fast and frantically that it sounds like he's desperately trying to find a way out of the song. Luckily for listeners, it takes him a while.
Leo Kottke plays Wednesday, March 14, at The German House Theater, 315 Gregory Street, 303-2234, 8 p.m., $25.
