CLASSICAL: Rochester Oratorio Society (3/10)

Published by Brenda Tremblay on Mar 07, 2007

There's a moment in Schubert's Mass No. 4 in C when the soprano's voice arcs up to a high A and floats down while the other soloists echo her line. It's exquisite. This week's Rochester Oratorio Society concert offers you several such moments of beauty in a program drawn from the repertoire of Austrian composers, including Mozart's rarely performed Venite populi, an unusual piece for double chorus, and the "Gloria" from Haydn's St. Cecilia Mass. The basses and tenors exude tenderness and strength in Beethoven's "Prisoners' Chorus"from Fidelio. The chance to hear the beautifullysustained "Os Justi" by Anton Bruckner is alone worth the price of a ticket. Soloists include soprano Sarah Lawrence, mezzo-soprano Tami Petty, tenor Carl Johengen, bass Michael Koon, andthe ROS orchestra. Eric Townell conducts Saturday, March 10, 8 p.m. in Hochstein Performance Hall, 50 North Plymouth Avenue, 473-2234. $10-$20. rossings.org.
