JAZZ: David "Fathead" Newman (3/8)

Published by Ron Netsky on Mar 07, 2007

David "Fathead" Newman is a bona fide legend. He's been a formidable presence in jazz and popular music since the 1950s, when he rose to fame as saxophonist in Ray Charles' band. But he's never been more active as a leader than over the past decade, releasing an excellent string of albums including his Charles tribute, I Remember Brother Ray. His latest CD, Life, showcases his distinctive sax style on standards like "Autumn in New York," "Alfie" and "Girl Talk." On "Naima," John Coltrane's beautiful ballad, Newman shakes things up with accompaniment in double time. On Life he also brings out his flute for three gorgeous tunes, including the title track by the late John Hicks (to whom the album is dedicated) and "What A Wonderful World." When Newman takes the stage at VENU Resto-Lounge, don't expect wild improvisations. But be ready for some of the most magnificent melodic playing you're ever likely to hear.

Newman performs Thursday, March 8 , VENU Resto-Lounge & Nightclub, 151 St. Paul Street , 232-5650, 7 & 9:15 p.m., $17-$20.
