The maple-sugaring process is a curious one indeed. It requires roughly 40 gallons of sugar maple sap boiled for hours and hours and hours to turn into just 1 gallon of syrup. Learn about the whole complicated procedure and watch it in action this weekend, as Genesee Country Village & Museum hosts Sap, Syrup & Sugar Saturday and Sunday, March 17 and 18. The event features hikes through the sugar bush, where kids can help collect the sap and take it back to an open fire where the clear, sweet liquid will be boiled to create a less-clear, even sweeter liquid. Science, history and exercise. It's like the parenting trifecta. Plus, if kids are lucky they'll get to sample a taste or two.
The event runs 10 a.m.-5 p.m. both days, with a pancake breakfast 9 a.m.-2 p.m. (additional charges apply). Admission to Sap, Syrup & Sugar is $3-$5. The event continues March 24-25. GCVM is located at 1410 Flint Hill Road in Mumford. For more information call 538-6822 or visit www.gcv.org.
