ROCK: Marnie Stern (3/21)

Published by Frank De Blase on Mar 13, 2007

\Whoa...this is a little wild and freaky. And I like it. I do. I stuck Marnie Stern's disc, In Advance Of The Broken Arm, in the player and hit play. I was immediately and pleasantly assailed with a little WTF mixed in with some good ol' R&R. This Brooklyn chick's music is off-kilter and eclectic. The dynamics and the epic undertones are pretty cool, too. At the root of the unconventional and cool is Stern's finger-tap staccato style; a style that is simultaneously symphonic and apocalyptic --- it's almost neo-classical. Stern sings too, wailing odd and pretty atop the borderline chaos, where she reigns unchallenged. You really, really oughta check her out.

Marnie Stern plays with Barr and Little Yellow Bird Wednesday, March 21, at A/V, 8 Public Market, 423-0320, 9 p.m., $6.
