This New York City outfit skirts the boundaries of radio-friendly modern rock (and even power balladry at times) but still manages to show impressive range. Singer/songwriter Brian Bauers clearly likes to approach rock from multiple angles, which gives the band a style-bouncing eclecticism that offsets its pop ambitions. Bauers isn't shy about baring his influences, and this ends up working in the band's favor when he and the rest of the players come up with a strangely fresh sound nonetheless. The WMDs reveal their true strengths, however, when they venture deeper into the unique aspects of Bauers' creativity without sacrificing hooks. A rotating cast of special guests (including Bacci drummer and Rochester native Paul Amorese) brings a suitable degree of edge and dimension to the songs.
The WMDs and Mike Z play Friday, March 9, at High Fidelity, 170 East Avenue, 325-6490, doors at 6 p.m., $5.
