Intimate Apparel, the five-time national award-winning play written by Lynn Nottage, is making its Rochester debut this month at the Jewish Community Center. A drama set in early 20th century New York City, the story follows Esther Mills, a 35-year-old African-American seamstress who makes bridal corsets while struggling to come to terms with her own single existence. When Esther receives a letter from a Barbados native who is working on the Panama Canal, the plot is set into motion as Esther's odd assortment of companions --- a childless socialite, an artistic prostitute and a Jewish factory owner --- band together to help Esther's cross-hemisphere romance bloom.
The play runs March 10, 15, 17, 22 and 24 at 8 p.m. and Sundays March 11 and 18 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $22 for Adults and $15 for ages 18 and under. The Jewish Community Center is located at 1200 Edgewood Avenue. For more information, call 461-2000 ext 235 or visit www.jccrochester.org/feinbloom/centerstage.
