ArtSmart Summer Camp

Published by Linda Kostin on Apr 04, 2007

If you've got a kid, the City of Rochester's Bureau of Recreation has the summer camp for you. "ArtSmart Camp is great for youths who are really into art, and those who haven't discovered they're into art yet," says Nancy Johns Price, program development specialist.

Both performing arts and fine arts will be explored in the seven-week camp for ages 6 to 13, where budding artists get the respect they deserve. "At ArtSmart Camp, youths are empowered to make decisions about the kind of play they'll write and perform, or the direction a visual arts project should take," says Johns Price. Visual artists, dance instructors, and other members of the arts community visit weekly to work with the kids. Cultural activities and field trips to the theater, Rochester Museum and Science Center, and Sea Breeze are in the offing, too. Finding your muse in the wave pool? Hey, stranger things have happened.

ArtSmart Camp, culminating with a performance and art show, runs Monday through Friday, July 2 through August 17, at Cobbs Hill Park's Lodge at Lake Riley. Camp hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m., a bonus for working parents.

To ensure the future artists of Rochester get the personalized attention they so richly deserve, ArtSmart camp is limited to 50 participants. The deadline to register is May 1.

The fee for ArtSmart Camp is $110 per week. Priority is given to city residents. Kids receiving DSS assistance are eligible. Federal lunch program will be provided. Info at www.cityofrochester.gov, or call 428-7371 to receive a registration form.
