This week's calls to citizenship include the following events and activities. (All are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted.)
  • John Parr, attorney and co-founder of the Denver-based Center for Regional and Neighborhood Action, is the speaker for the next Reshaping Rochester program, on Wednesday, April 4, from 7 to 9 p.m., at Calvary St. Andrews Church, 95 Averill Avenue. Parr will discuss public-private partnerships, sustainability, and public involvement in the decision-making process. Sponsors include the Rochester Regional Community Design Center, the American Institute of Architects' Rochester chapter, and Preferred Care. Tickets: $10 in advance, $15 at the door; they're available at Wegmans, Parkleigh, and Rochester Regional Community Design Center. Information, see www.reshapingrochester.com.
  • Discourse and public opinion that run counter to the mainstream are increasingly available through the internet. RIT is hosting its annual William A Kern Communications Symposium, "Counterpublics, Media, and Social Change," from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, and Thursday, April 12. This year's symposium will focus on how issues like the environment and democracy are treated by the media. The event will be held in RIT's auditoriums.
  • Outdoor morning Vigils for Peace in Time of War have been organized by several local churches for Thursday, April 5. All begin at 7:30 a.m. The locations: 220 South Winton Road, the corner of Fitzhugh and Broad downtown, and the corner of Park Avenue and Culver Road.
  • Martin Luther King Jr.'s "Why I am Opposed to the War in Vietnam" speech will be recreated as part of a local observance of the 40th anniversary of the speech. Students, faculty, and community members will take turns reading from King's talk beginning at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, at the UR's Interfaith Chapel. The event also includes a photo display and live music.
