DEVELOPMENT: More biz in the South Wedge

Published by Jeremy Moule on Apr 03, 2007
Over the past three years, Rochester's South Wedge neighborhood has seen an influx of businesses, particularly unique small stores. And that growth is continuing.

Dan Buyer, the executive director of the South Wedge Planning Committee, counts the recent opening of the Green Grocery as a major success. In 2005, the committee worked with SUNY Geneseo business students on a business plan for the neighborhood, and that plan identified a grocery as an important need.

Among the latest additions in the Wedge:

Urban Village Scooters opened its 700 South Clinton Avenue showroom and service center about two weeks ago and had its grand opening on Saturday. The business, owned by Kurt Schweitzer, sells street-legal scooters, including smaller models that don't require a motorcycle license. The brands: Tank and EVT. The business is also building up its parts department.

At 654 South Avenue, Mike Ford and Sandy Brazis recently opened Thread. The store carries private label clothing as well as jewelry and accessories from local makers. Thread also carries baby clothing and candles.

In November, Dave Alfieri opened the Black Pearl Bar and Grill, in the former Dicky's at the corner of Meigs and Caroline Streets. Alfieri is the former owner of the Big Apple Café on Park Avenue. The Pearl has a full service bar with, as Alfieri puts it, "eclectic pub grub," and a dining room specializing in steak, pork, and seafood.
