JAZZ: Pierre Dorge & The New Jungle Orchestra (4/9)

Published by Ron Netsky on Apr 04, 2007

The band may not be a household name in the United States, but those who follow the international jazz scene know that Pierre Dorge & The New Jungle Orchestra is among thefew groups that can traverse the territory between Duke Ellington and the avant-garde. (That would explain the tune "When Duke Greets Sun Ra From Outer Space.") Let's just say when this orchestra plays "The Mooche" it's not your grandmother's "Mooche." And its version of "Caravan" goes places Ellington's never dreamed of. Made up of Denmark's finest jazz players, the -piece group is simply spectacular. Back in 1988 it played the very first Bop Shop concert. Two decades later the group's back for what should be an unforgettable show at the German House.

Catch Pierre Dorge & The New Jungle Orchestra Monday, April 9, at The German House Theater, 315 Gregory Street, 8 p.m., $18-$22. www.bopshop.com.
