Hey, whaddaya know? A pop record I actually dig. A lot. Ska got a little beat up in the late '90s thanks to punks who copped its beat but didn't slow down to keep its groove. But ska gets the royal treatment as a main component in Lilly Allen's sound, and on her debut Alright, Still. This is a lighthearted, clever affair with the pop and bop accented by Specials and Selecter influences. Allen is a cheeky smart-ass with a quick wit and a mean streak. I wouldn't wanna be her ex-boyfriend. Her voice is cute in her understated style of singing, and the music rocks steady and cool. See, there's hope for pop music after all. Naturally, it's from England.
