If you kept a band chained in the basement, or raised it in the cultural seclusion of, say, an Amish community where absolutely no rock music influences could get in, and gave them all rock instruments you'd get a band that sounds like Detroit's The Hard Lessons. This supports my theory that though bands will cite various influences, the tones, volume, and attitude that come from within the animal are far greater than those that come from around the animal. And the three animals in The Hard Lessons play rock 'n' roll with very little apparent influence. Similarities, maybe, but no real influences. It's just odd enough to be cool, and it totally rocks.
The Hard Lessons play with The Mofos, The Grinders, and Babayaga Saturday, April 14, at the Bug Jar, 219 Monroe Avenue, 454-2966, 9 p.m., $6.
