Described generically, Z'ev (born Stefan Weisser) is a percussionist. More specifically (and academically), he's a catacoustic percussionist, which means his focus is more sound's reflection than its initial impact.
Born in Los Angeles, Z'ev has studied with the poet Emmett Williams and, way back in 1967, with tape composer Joseph Byrd. The purest results of this work wouldn't be heard until 2004, in the brilliant Touch release Headphone Music. And if you've ever had even a slight interest in sound's physical properties, this is vital listening. Likewise, Number One,Z'ev's recent collaboration with field-recording all-star Chris Watson and multi-instrumentalist KK Null, is a tension-filled combination of field recordings (insects, weather phenomena, vultures, etc) and live performance that stands distinctly apart from so much contemporary experimental music.
We can't really tell you what to expect from Z'ev's upcoming gig at A/V. But we can promise it's not to be missed, as Z'ev, now living abroad, hasn't properly toured the States in more than 20 years. Bring your earplugs if you need them, and prepare for some serious immersion.
Z'ev plays with Sikhara, Khate, and Deciduous vs. Conifer Sunday, April 15, at A\V Space, 8 Public Market (second floor), at 9 p.m., $5. www.avspace.org.
