SPECIAL EVENT: "Woven From the Soul, Spun from the Heart"

Published on Apr 04, 2007

Five years ago, a group of faculty and staff from Monroe Community College formed the Global Interest Group to promote discussion of global issues on the campus. The response from students, faculty, and the community was positive, and people asked for more.

This year, on Thursday, April 5, the group offers a three-part event exploring cultural aspects of Iran. It begins with lectures and slides by Shahin Monshipour, MCC instructor of sociology, placing the textile products of the Bakhtiari Pastoral Nomads of Iran in a cultural context. The Bakhtiari are primarily sheep herders, and using wool from their sheep, they weave textiles, the most well known being hand-knotted carpets. Following the presentation there will also be a chance to socialize and to sample a tribal buffet of Iranian food, tea, and desserts.

The program will conclude with dances performed by Beebee Boft Dance of Canada. They're choreographed by Aram Bayat (choreographer and director of Khorsheed Khanoom Dance Group) and are based on Dr. Monshipour's research on the tribe as well as traditional Iranian folk dances. One work is inspired by the movement of the hands while hand-knotting the carpets, a process that hasn't changed in more than 2500 years.

Woven from the Soul, Spun from the Heart takes place Thursday, April 5, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Monroe Community College Theater, Building 4, 1000 East Henrietta Road. The event is free and open to the public. 292-2000.
