BLUES: Harper (5/16)

Published by Frank De Blase on May 08, 2007

Aussie harmonicat Harper's move to the States has also been a bit of a move from the blues as well. On his new disc "Day By Day," the harp's dirty honk still wails, but the tempos step well outside the lines tempered with colors that aren't necessarily blue. But to be fair, Harper has always been fairly distinctive and eclectic, with his soul man baritone to the menacing drone of his didgeridoo. So the fact that he's spreading his wings arrangement-wise is consistent with his drive. The instrumentation is ominous and primal, and therefore potentially more true to the blues than the stuff that cooperates and obeys.

Harper plays Wednesday, May 16, at Dinosaur BBQ, 99 Court Street, 325-7090, 10 p.m., free
