This week's calls to citizenship include the following events and activities. (All are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted.)
  • The Center for Sustainable Living will show the film, "The End of Suburbia" on Friday, May 11. The film will be followed by a discussion and workshop led by CSL's Bill LaBine on changing the course of our energy-consumptive culture. Sponsored by CSL and Seeking Common Ground, the event will be held at Victor Village Hall, 60 East Main Street. The film will be screened at 5:30, and tickets are $5. The workshop starts at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $10. Registration: 226-8521.
  • At the next Reshaping Rochester lecture, on Friday, May 15, Orlando traffic engineer Walter Kulash will discuss "Transportation for Livable Communities," a concept that balances traffic performance with street landscaping, retail friendliness, and public space. The event, which is sponsored by the Rochester Regional Community Design Center, the Rochester chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and Preferred Care, will be held at 7 p.m. at the Memorial Art Gallery. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door, and are available at Wegmans, Parkleigh, and the Rochester Regional Community Design Center. Info: 271-0520 or www.rrcdc.org.
  • A "Give ‘em Hill Meet Up" to promote the presidential candidacy of Hillary Rodham Clinton will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 10, at the Apollo Restaurant, 2891 East Henrietta Road. Free balloons, bumper stickers, window signs and literature will be available. The event is sponsored by the Clinton campaign.
  • The South Wedge Planning Committee will examine Buffalo's revitalization of its Elmwood Avenue commercial district on Friday, May 11. Justin Azzarella, executive director of the Elmwood Avenue Association, will discuss the design, promotion, and economic strategies his community used to return vitality to a once-declining area. The event will be held at 6 p.m. at 224 Mt. Hope Avenue. Tickets are $10. Reservations: 454-3295.
  • You can learn how to reduce air toxins at the South East Area Coalition's "Tox-out" on Saturday, May 12. There will be a bike repair clinic, music, and food; the event will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. at 1045 South Clinton Avenue.
  • Anti-war vigils will be held on Wednesday, May 16, in front of the First Unitarian Church, 220 South Winton Road from 7:30 to 9 a.m. and on the corners of Park Avenue and Culver Road from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m.
