The state had wanted to expand the intersection at Clover Street and Jefferson Road, creating two through lanes and left- and right-turn lanes in all directions. But that proposal met protest from residents and town and village of Pittsford officials alike.
DOT officials wanted the community to be satisfied with the project, says spokeswoman Lori Maher. So they decided to eliminate the right-turn lanes, which the department believes will not impact the safety of the intersection. "We said we could live with a little less pavement," Maher said this morning.
The changes will delay the project. The DOT now expects to start construction in spring 2008.
Cynthia Jonsen-Brown, chair of the Clover Street Preservation Association, which had fought the project, calls the renovation "a good compromise."
