He may not be a household name nationally, but ask any Philadelphia jazz fan to name the city's current trumpet giants and John Swana will be at or near the top of the list. National recognition shouldn't be too far away; Swana has already appeared on albums by Chris Potter, Eric Alexander, and others. On his recent CD, On Target, Swanaduels skillfully with guitarist Jesse Van Ruller. That same sort of improvisational interplay should occur when Swana visits Rochester to sit in with Bob Sneider's band at the Strathallan.
John Swana joins Bob Sneider Friday and Saturday, May 4 and 5, 8:30 p.m.-midnight, at the Strathallan, 550 East Avenue, 461-5010, no cover.
